Classic/Antique Car Repair: transmision, borg warner, ford part numbers

Question
i have a 3 speed transmission with od for my 56 tbird with a 312 engine. not sure if i have the right trans the numbers on the tail shaft are R10E-1A other #are M 20-50 PF on case #1A-7222 IS THE TRANSMISSION A BORG WARNER T-85 THANKS

Answer
The part with the R10E is the overdrive.  That sounds right to me.  That is definitely a Borg-Warner Overdrive unit.

The main transmission case should be marked B5A 7006C  I have Ford part numbers for all parts, but I do not have the equivalent Borg-Warner numbers. It is my recollection that these are T-85s, but I cannot prove that.

I think you probably have the rignt one for your car, but if you cannot find that FORD part number on it - maybe someone has been switching parts on you.  Those transmissions (T-85s) were used in many different car makes, including Packards.
