Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1967 Starter Problem, ss camaro, torque starter
QuestionI have a 1967 SS Camaro Big Block 396 Motor the Headers are real Close to my starter and Yesterday I dove it 300 Miles. I stopped to get gas and the car wouldnt start. It made no nose. We thoght that the starter was over headed so we let is cool down and then I had to TAP on it with a Wrench. It started after that, Is there a Starter that will work better for these cars or a Heat sink that can go over the Headers or around the Starter?
AnswerJon, there is a high torque starter available for this engine. Also when this car was built the factory installed a metal heat shield over the starter. It was only tin but it allowed air to circulate around the starter and deflected the direct heat of the exhaust. I doubt if you can buy it new and maybe a check of a bone yard that handles old stuff might get one. If not you local sheet metal shop might be called into play.
