Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1974 Nova door hinges, door hinges, spot welds

Question
Hi,   I've been working on a 74 nova for my son. It's a 2 door coupe. I'm looking for tips on repairing the door hinge. The factory hinges look to spot welded and glued maybe. I've bought a hinge repair kit (bushings, pins, etc.)  The holes where the bushing go are, for lack of a better term, "wallered out". I've thought of maybe welding in the part of the hole that is worn, then redrilling it. Would that work?

My neighbor suggested grinding off the old hinges and replacing the whole hinge. I don't know but positioning a new hinge to line up correctly sounds like a risky move since the hinge would have to be welded in place.

Any help would be appreciated!

Answer
I like your idea a whole lot better. You don't even have to worry about how far in you weld, as long as the ends are really good. The metal in these hinges welds well.

Not only would new hinges have to be welded, those are machine spot welds and it is not the same as hand held.

If for some reason, all failed and you had to replace the hinges, use a backing plate inside the door and bolts. Don't try to reweld, but again the alignment would be a real concern.
