Classic/Antique Car Repair: tail and iterior lights 68 mustang, fuse clip, auto literature

Question
I recently purchased a 1968 mustang.  The turn signals work, but tail and brake lights do not.  The courtesy light at the rear of the console works, but dome and dash lights do not.  The talight bulbs look okay, as do the fuses.  Any idea what might be wrong?

Answer
The lights that are not working are all on the same fuse, so I suspect you have a dirty or oxidized fuse clip. Remove all the fuses and clean the clips that they snap into, and also clean the ends of the fuses.  Get a test light from your autoparts store and verify that you have 12 volts both on the fuse end caps and on the clips that hold them - at BOTH ends of the fuses.

If you find no problems there, it is possible that you have a bad headlight switch.  Since these are quite available and  easy to change, I'd do that next. NAPA stores will have the headlight switch, I believe.

If neither of those approaches leads to a solution, you're going to need a wiring diagram to troubleshoot further.  I advise you to get a factory shop manual for the car, it will help you over this hurdle and anything else that comes up in the future.

These run on eBay frequently, or you can contact one of the auto literature dealers - I use Ed Faxon of www.faxonautolit.com, but there are many others.

Good luck!
