Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1952 chevy engine, chevy engine, mid 60s

Question
where is the oil filter located on this engine

Answer
Oil Filters were not supplied on the less expensive cars as standard equipment until sometime in the mid 60s.  Many dealers added them as accessories, but if yours doesn't have one, your car's dealer didn't.

The old fashioned oil filters were not like the ones we have now- they looked like a large can of beans, strapped to the side of the block, with a removable lid that you could take off to remove a paper cartridge in order to change it - and you had to clean out the inside of the can with a rag to get all the grit out of it.  They really didn't work very well - better than nothing, I guess, but not very!
