Classic/Antique Car Repair: 69 chevy bel air 327, chevy bel air, 69 chevy

Question
I have a 69 chevy bel air with 327 motor. was wondering what the timing is suppose to be. thanks

Answer
The modern gasoline is so different than the stuff these cars were designed to run on that the original specs are pretty useless now. To set your timing, first adjust the point dwell to 30 degrees, and then start out with the timing at 5 degrees BTC.  If you don't hear any pinging, advance it bit by bit in 5 degree increments until you just barely hear pinging on moderate acceleration in high gear at 30 MPH on a flat road - that is the optimum setting for performance and economy for the gas you are using when you do this.
