Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1954 Chevy Truck starting problem, chevy truck, excess gas

Question
Truck won't start. Cleaned the battery ground wire connection. Has weak spark to points and weak spark to plug #1. Started and ran for a few minutes then blew black smoke and wouldn't start again. Coil was super hot. Has 235 inline 6 converted to 12v with an alternator with internal resistor.

Answer
Sounds like the coil has gone bad, or is wired backwards.

Make sure the neg (-) pole goes to the distributor.

Black smoke is excess gas in the exhaust. COULD be from some of the plugs not being fired by the coil.

Satisfy the coil problem and if it still won't start, follow up.
