Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1947 Mercury oil pan gasket, pan gasket, there some sort

Question
The front edge of the oil pan gasket in my 1947 Mercury V-8 flathead is leaking and I would like to replace it.  I have not had an opportunity to really get under the car to inspect it (it is at a remote location) and before I order replacement gaskets am wondering whether it is straightforward to remove the pan and replace the gasket or is it more complicated--for example, is it a simple flat gasket or is there some sort of "rope" gasket that is fitted to the front?  ....Thanks.

Answer
Never seen that model, but based on the year, your latter guess is probably closer to actual.

BUT, with the new technology and rubber, it is generally much easier than it used to be.

"Glue" the new gasket into place after cleaning surface with RTV silicone. Be sure and take note of interlocking tabs when transitioning from cork to rubber.
