Volkswagen: My 1999.5 jetta wont start, jetta vr6, dash lights

Question
I just bought a 1999.5 jetta vr6. The other day i started my car and took off i tried to roll up the windows but it wouldnt work. I went to my house and turned the car off and then tried to turn it back on and it wouldnt start. The dash lights turn on but the engine doesnt do anything at all. Then I got out the car and rolled up the windows with my key. When I tried to lock it the alarm wouldnt turn on. The only way to start my car is to push start it. I dont know what could be wrong with it can u help me?

Answer
Hey Vidal!

The most likely cause is your battery.   Pop off the covers on the battery with a flat-head screwdriver.  Wear safety glasses, as there is acid in there.

Check the water level inside,  the water should be filled to the top of the plastic side as you look in the battery. Do not fill it to the top of the holes!  Use distilled water, if it's low.

Put a full charge on the battery (do not jump start).  If you don't have a charger,  bring it to a garage.  They will tell you if the battery accepts the charge and is any good.

If the battery is declared faulty, replace it.  Be very careful to ensure you hook up the + wire to the + terminal on the battery!

Try this procedure first.

If this doesn't cure the problem,  please let me know.

A low battery usually causes all of these problems in the Jetta.   The electric problems may seem weird,  but again, it is a common symptom.

Take Care,

Ron
