Classic/Antique Car Repair: Core Depoist, poor customer relations, nissan dealer

Question
Hi Dick,
My Nissan dealer installed a new starter motor in my Maxima. They charged me a $60 core deposit charge because my old starter was not an OEM.  I think this is a rip-off.  Is this legal?  They gave me the old starter.  Thanks.

Answer
You've got me a bit out of my league here, I don't ever deal with dealer service departments, because I do my own work and I can't afford them anyway.  But I understand their problem.  They need to send in the old starter for rebuilding so they can sell it to the next guy, and if it is not an acceptable rebuild candidate, they'd be stuck with it.  That's why they wouldn't take it.  The $60 is a bit steep, but that's a dealer for you!

I'm sure there is no legal problem here, it's just a case of poor customer relations on their part - you can't sue them for that!
