Classic/Antique Car Repair: Grounding engine, torino cobra, negative cable

Question
I've had a 1970 Torino Cobra for several years and never noticed there is no grounding strap.  Is this necessary for the car and what effects could it cause without it if so.  Thanks!

Answer
The grounding strap is there primarily to keep ignition and alternator noise from interfering with your AM radio reception on weak stations, but it also is a backup to the other grounding provisions on the car - so it's a good idea to add one. It might keep your headlights a bit brighter, and it might keep your battery a bit closer to optimum charge.  Since your battery negative cable goes directly to the engine block or head, the starter (which is the main current draw in the car) is probably not going to be affected one way or the other.
