Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1930 Plymouth, july 1st canada day, dick benjamin

Question
Forgive me for asking, you do state that you are not a body man, but I thought perhaps you may have heard over time how to go about restoring the roof of a 1930 Plymouth U 4dr sedan?  I just got the car July 1st (Canada day!)  It is complete, body is fantastic but there is no roof.  I have no experience, I have always had muscle cars, so this is all new to me.  I want to keep it original, or as close to it as possible.  Could you point me in the right direction?
Thank you VERY much for your time.
Patricia

Answer
Well, I'm not going to be much help, but I can tell you what little I "THINK" I know about this, from other cars of that era that I've repaired mechanically.  I THINK the roof is framed in hardwood, and covered with a chicken-wire mesh, then with a rubberized fabric topping.  A good cabinet maker could probably make the wood pieces, then a really old time convertible top shop might be willing to do the rest.  But this is all conjecture on my part; I am not really familiar with Plymouth construction methods.

Bottom line, my advice is to join the Plymouth club and ask fellow members.  They have a very good organization, and are friendly and helpful folks.  They will care about your car, and make sure you get it done the right way.  Contact them at: www.plymouthclub.com/  The head honcho is Jim Benjaminson, last I heard (no relation to me)

Good luck to you.  The car is certainly worth keeping original - they are scarce as hen's teeth.
