Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1967 mustang fuel line, fuel line hose, shop rags

Question
I recently pinched the metal fuel line with a jack under my mustang.  I purchased some flexible rubber fuel line hose and some clamps to use to bridge the section I will need to cut out.  What is the safest way to cut the line?  I do not want to do anything that will create sparks or heat.

Answer
Hi Ben,
I'm not a Mustang tech but we have the same thing happen at times so to cut the line we first cut off the fuel supply between the crushed section and the tank. There should be a rubber flex line toward the rear somewhere. We use a "Fuel Line Crimp" tool or slip two pieces of flex line onto the points of a needle nose vice grips which works just as well. Once we close off the fuel supply, only a small amount of fuel will come out as we cut the line on either side of the crushed area with a small tubing cutter. (available at most auto parts stores) They may also have the fuel line clamp necessary to crimp off the fuel supply from the tank. Neither tool is expensive.

Don't use a hacksaw as it can make heat and in some cases sparks. We use a large drain pan and have someone hold a fire extinguisher ready just in case. It helps to tie shop rags around each wrist as some fuel will still be in the line. Gasoline is hard on the hands but even harder on the arms. I have done the same thing in shops and so have many mechanics. I have also had cars brought to me in shops I have worked in with the same problem so you should not feel bad. If you are going to do this yourself be careful and don't take any chances.
