Classic/Antique Car Repair: Chev gas gauge, gas gauge, gauge wire

Question
Hello.
I recently got a 66 4dr Impala in quite good shape. I am in the process of cleaning things and fixing what doesn't work.

When I first got it, the gas gauge worked. I removed the dash and the instrument cluster, painted stuff and put it back together.
Well, the stupid little copper tabs on the plastic thing on the instrument cluster gave out. So I basically built a new wiring harness, and kept the original plug that goes to the back of the cluster.

It's reassembled, and everything seems to work, except for the gas gauge, which is pegged high. I have tested it in and out. It's a real witch to take the cluster out, so I am wondering if I get a new GG, and drop the wires down from where I re-harnessed them, should it work like a real gas gauge? I don't want to start pulling it back apart until I can verify that the one in there really is bad and is not the problem.

Hi  well if you have no more broken wires or split wires grounding out, it should still work. also be sure all parts are grounded good. You should use the same gauge wire , if you use a heaver wire it could cut down on the resistance of the signal. so try to stay with the same size.  the gauge in the tank is just a sending unit and a sock filter , so if the gauge was working prior to the wire breaking , it should still be good....>>>>>
