Hi,I am  buying a 1954 2 door packard vin.5477-3172,This car has been sitting in a barn for 35 years its complete and needs some restoration well alot.Is this a good car to work with and are there any big parts issues. Thanks Tom.

These are exceptionally well engineered and built cars, and parts are available for almost all mechanical needs - there are vendors who specialize in Packard parts - my advice is to join the Packard club (go to www.thepackardclub.org for information) and attend a few meetings and get to know the other members - you will get a lot of good information about where to go for anything you need.

Some trim parts are getting hard to find - but if you set up a "watch" on eBay, just about everything comes along sooner or later.

Answer
There were 4 differnent transmissions available for these cars.  If it has an automatic transmission, it is either an "Ultramatic" or a "Twin-Ultramatic".   You can tell by counting the detents you feel when moving the shift lever. The Twin Ultramatic has Park, Neutral, Drive1, Drive2, Low, and reverse, in that order.  The Ultramatic has only one "Drive" position.

If it has manual shift, it will have a standard "H" pattern shift quadrant, and it may also have an overdrive, indicated by a pull knob which sticks out from under the dash.
