Classic/Antique Car Repair: 40 Packard turn signals, filament bulbs, j c whitney

Question
I'd like to add turn signals to my 120.  I don't have a clue where to begin.  Who makes them?  What's involved in the installation?  Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Answer
Add-on turn signals were a common accessory for cars in the later 40s through the 60s or so, but once they became standard on all cars and trucks, the market went the way of the buggy whip!  J.C.Whitney used to carry them, perhaps they still do.  (see below)

Adding them requires that you add additional light fixtures to your car, or else modify the factory bulb sockets for the tail and parking lamps to accept dual filament bulbs.  Either way, this is not a minor task.

You will not find a switch setup that looks factory installed, or automatically cancels after a turn, you will have to add a switch somewhere within reach of the driver to operate them - where you mount it and what it looks like are open to all sorts of variation - you'll have to work it out for yourself, or hire an automotive electrician to work it out for you.

I just checked with J.C.Whitney - they still carry them.  Call them at 1 800 529 4486 and talk it over with their order person.  Their number for the control switch is GM138972.  The dual filament bulb sockets are avaiable from Y and Z's Yesterdays wiring supplies, in San Bernardino CA.   They will also have old fashioned looking wire for you to use in hooking them up.

I hope this is of some help.
