Subaru Repair: Headlight, fuse block, safety precaution

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1999 subaru impreza L awd. My headlights sometimes turns on when i shut off engine even when switch is off but if i turn on headlight switch while engine is off, the lights turn off. Its like the other way around. And sometimes the headlights are working normal & sometimes dont even turn on. Pls advise & if its the headlight switch pls teach me how to replace. Will wait for your advise. Thanks so much in advance
ANSWER: Hello,I don't think this is going to be as simple as guiding you through replacing the switch.Im suspecting a sticking head lamp relay but that is only an educated guess without looking at it.Im wondering if the head light circuit has been tampered with. It really would have to be diagnosed, and this is not a typical problem for that car.You could locate the head lamp relays in the fuse block under the hood and when it acts up lightly tap on the relays and see if the situation resolves it self ,if so buy a couple of headlamp relays.I hope that helps

QUESTION: Hi Justin, the circuit has not been tampered with. I'll try what you suggested. I also just wanted to ask if its not the relay, what do you think should i check next? If we end up changing or repairing the headlight switch do i have to put down dashboard & or steering wheel? If steering wheel, will i have problems w/airbag or do i have to take off battery or take out a fuse?

Answer
Yes, you do need to de-activate the air bag system prior to working in the steering column area. This is a safety precaution.I would go online and purchase the repair info & wiring diagrams from one of many sources very inexpensive and a great value.Hope that helps
