Classic/Antique Car Repair: transmission, 57 chevy bel air, chevy bel air

Question
I recently bought a 57 chevy bel air.  I need to change the automatic
transmission tailshaft seal.  I am not positive what transmission is in the car.  I
was told that the engine is a  60 corvette v-8 in it but not positive.
Transmission shift indicator shows PRNDL2L1.  Is there a marking on the
transmission somewhere so that I can determine which one I have powerglide or
turboglide?

Answer
This is the problem with modified cars, and is the reason I don't get involved with them myself, as I say in my intro on this site.

I can tell you that if you have that many positions on your shift mechanism (feel with the shift lever to see if there is a detent at each of the positions - it may be the wrong shift indicator), it cannot be a Powerglide, since there was only Park, Neutral, Drive, Low and Reverse, IN THAT ORDER, in those years.

If you have reverse next to park, it is a much newer transmission than 1960, but as for what it is, I haven't any way to tell you what it is.   Take the car to someone who knows transmissions and get him to look at it, he may be able to identify it. If he cannot, see if you can track down whoever did this to it, maybe they will recall what they did.

Sorry not to be more help,

Dick
