Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 Cadillac Coupe Deville - blowing off oil., cadillac coupe deville, excessive blowby

Question
It seemed to be coming out of the dipstick tube and the fill.  Is it possible there was just too much oil in it as the dipstick is inoperable?

Today, I drove the car 30miles but not over 50MPH and it did not blow off oil.  Last night, I drove 40miles at 60MPH+ and when I hit the gas, a white cloud appeared behind me.

-----Question-----
When I'm on the highway at higher speeds the car blows off a lot of oil when I hit the accelerator.  The Oil dip stick was broken off half way and half of it remains in the cavity or may have slipped down into the oil pan.  The engine does not make any noise at all, runs great.

Suggestions?

Thank you,
Joe

You didn't say where the oil is blowing out of. If it is coming out of the dipstick tube or the oil fill cap, your problem is that your engine has excessive blowby (worn out piston rings) and the blowby is overpowering your PCV system. It is also possible that your PCV valve has failed, so check that.  Take it out of the valve cover and shake it - if it rattles it's OK, if it doesn't, soak it in carb cleaner until it frees up and rattles.  If that doesn't stop the oil loss, you are going to have to schedule an engine rebuild soon.  Of course, the dipstick needs to be replaced, and capping that hole will help a bit, but if you have that much blowby, your engine is badly worn.

If the oil is comming out the tailpipe, it is still a sign of a worn engine - so the conclusion is pretty much the same either way.

Sorry - don't shoot the messenger!

I think you should drain the oil and examine what comes out of it.  The white smoke is a danger sign - it may be overfull because there is water in the oil - that is the only thing that makes white smoke, other than transmission fluid (which would be a totally different problem).   Even if the oil looks OK, that is one way to know how much oil is in the car, when you refill it with the right amount!

If there is water in the oil, there will be a creamy light colored layer mixed in with the dirty oil.
