Classic/Antique Car Repair: rear brake drum 65 ford f100, wheel lugs, ford f100

Question
how do you remove the rear drum is there a puller

Answer
I'm really here to answer questions about cars, not trucks, but I think the F-100 in those years had the tapered axle/hub arrangement.  Look at the center of the rear wheel, and see if there is a large nut/cotter pin arrangement on the end of the axle.  If there is, yes, you will need a puller.

This tool is called a "hub puller", and your local tool rental place will have one.  It will have 3 legs, which you bolt on to the wheel lugs (remove the wheel first).  Also, before you install the puller, remove the cotter pin and take the big nut off the center and remove the washer that is behind it, then thread it back on to the tip of the axle shaft just flush with the end of the shaft, this will protect the threads from the puller center push deal.  Lubricate the threads of the puller center bolt, and start tightening it against the end of the axle.  Be sure the parking brake is fully released, and the brake lining adjusters are loose enough that the wheel can turn freely.  Then use a 3 pound hammer to tighten the dogbone shaped handle on the puller.  It has to be VERY tight to get the hub off - you may have to let it stand overnight so the temperature change will help it to come free.  If that doesn't do it, tighten it some more, and get a propane torch and heat the center hub of the brake drum -if you get it really hot, that will probably get it to release.  These are no fun, but stay with it, it WILL come off!
