Classic/Antique Car Repair: push rod failure in a ford 302, roller rocker arms, ford 302

O.K.  I've replaced the broken rocker arm stud, push rods and lifters. I was told that the remaining studs were checked by some type of lateral load test on the rod.  I was called by the shop working on the car and was told they were letting it run to check for leaks, timing, general observation.  Another push rod stud broke off on the same side of the engine.  What would make that happen?  Camshaft, pistons, Valve spring tension?  I'm completely stumped! Any help would be appreciated

Is it worth the investment to ($200 parts and $200 labor) replace the standard rocker arms w/ roller rocker arms.  The engine has been opened and the heads are already removed to replace stuck lifters and broken rocker arm stud. I'm not looking for mega hot rod power.  But will it increase mpg, and will you feel additional horse power ?  Car sat for an extended period of time.  This is the reason given to me for stuck lifters in such a new engine.

I have a 65 mustang w/ a new 302 crate motor( 1100 miles)   A push rod broke.  I have source who says simply replace the rod no damge has occured internally (cam can't be damaged because rocker spring keeps the valve it operates closed, but isn't the lifter still being moved by the cam?) this source went on to say this was a very common problem w/ cast rocker arms.  I have another source who says the cam can be damaged or it could be improper oiling of the push rod in the engine the engine jacket,  a lifter could be stuck or a host of other problems.  Before I give it to a shop to diagnose what should I know about the situation.

Much obliged for the help,

Mark

Mark ; Hi- well you might have just had a faulty push rod. I would not worry about it, if you start to break more than  1 - I would replace all of them. and the lifters should all be new so I doubt it is the lifters. I would use good oil and add a can of STP to it also. and as far as the cam - you only have 1100 miles on it , so it should B  fine. I would just replace the rod myself.look at the springs to see if they are ok. P.S. you should have changed the oil and filter at 1,000 miles as that is break in  time- so replace the oil and filter. I would use a good 30 wt. oil and a can of stp . and new fram filter.   ok >>>

Mark ;
Hi  well as far as the rockers , if you are not going for a hot rod / etc. you can just get some new H.D. rockers  and new push rods and lifters and that you can do yourself. As far as fast or more power it should be the same ,but new. The cam should be ok , if it sat the lifters must have dried up and filled with gunk. I would change the oil and filter a few times to get it clean .

HI  ok I tell you what you should do this way you will stop any more studs from pulling out or breaking and causing some serious damage to the motor , get a pin kit, this way you will have each stud drilled threw the stud and stud mounting hole than a roll push pin will get pushed into the hole of each on and now they will not come out as they will be pinned in, it is that simple. ok well the cam might have a bit of a lift on it or the heads could be run down , etc. but it is not un comon for studs to pull out thats why some are just pressed into the head and some are screwed into it and some are pinned and even screwed and pinned sso it is a good idea to pin   them ant it dosnt cost that much to do.
