Question
Can you tell me where the hot wire goes?  Maybe this will help.

Hi there!  I have a 71 karmann ghia (Volkswagen).  When I press the  brakes, the brake lights go off.  When I let off of the brakes, the brake lights go on. I have just the opposite of what I need!  There are two 3 prong switches by the master cylinder (left front tire).  I bought a new switch but that hasn't helped.  I believe my wires are crossed but I'm not sure which.  Could it be the fuse?  I would be happy to receive any suggestions.  Thanks!

Hi Michele,

Well...you've got a bit of an unusual set-up.  Two switches and they are three pronged each.  I checked and found the three pronged is correct but why there are two I'm not sure yet.

It would be VERY helpful if you could verify the wire colors for me.  On each of those two three prong switches, one wire should go to a connection on the body or chassis...to work as a ground.  It's likely brown or black.  Could you verify this and let me know the other wire colors on each switch?

Thanks,

Dave

Answer
As I mentioned in the note of two seconds ago...the HOT wire is the black wire from the fuse to the top prong on the diagram.  Another black wire leads from the lower prong on the upper switch and it carries HOT to the lower switch.

Clear as mud?
