Classic/Antique Car Repair: power wing window, auto glass repair, plastic retainers

Question
I have a 1979 Lincoln Mark. Recently, the wing window stopped coming back up. I can still hear the motor running. It almost feels like it is slipping on the gear.
My question is how do you get the darn door panel off? I have everything unscrewed that I can find. I have popped all the mounting screws. However, there seems to be something holding the door panel near the middle. I don't want to force anything. Can you offer any advise? How about books that could help in the future

Answer
This car is a bit new for me to know anything about, but I'm guessing that there are plastic retainers that are permanently affixed to the door trim panels, and arranged to push through holes in the metal structure of the door.  If this is the way the car is made, you need a special tool to pop these loose without damaging the trim panel - it is a beefy sort of putty knife with rounded edges and a slot down the middle - one slips it behind the trim panel such that the slot straddles the retainer, then uses the tool to pry the retainer out of it's mating hole.

My advice is to take the car to an auto glass repair shop and have the man do it while you watch - he should have the right tool and the certain knowledge of how the car is put together.

Once the door panel is loose all the way around it's outer periphery, it probably needs to be lifted up off a metal hanger that supports it on the door frame - again, that's only a guess, I never worked on a Lincoln that new.

Your guess that the gear is stripped is probably correct -this is a common trouble spot for cars with powre vent wing windows.
