Classic/Antique Car Repair: 283 fuel pump/fuel pump pushrod probs., minor blemishes, pump fuel

Question
Hello,
I recently started to help a relative of mine replace the fuel pump on a 60's Impala with a 283-2v.  He took it off and etc., but had a difficult time putting it back on...That's where I came in.  After fooling with it for several hours I remembered the fuel pump push rod had come down and therefore was in the way of putting in the new pump arm.  I moved it back into position and installed the pump.

No fuel or pressure...

I took the new pump off and noticed that the pushrod felt stuck in its position.  I grabbed it carefully and looked at it.  It did have a few very minor blemishes on the metal towards the pump arm, but none towards the camshaft.  I greased it back up and reinstalled everything...still to no fuel or pressure...Looks like the pump itself is fine as I have pressed its arm and it builds pressure.
Any help...I'm confused?

Hi ; I know that some times that rod can be a real pain , but  some thies the rod can be worn out and it will cause the pump to not work , and at other times the cam loabe itself can be worn and you would have to replace the cam , so the best way around that if it was the cam is to just get a elect. fuel pump. , I wonder if the pump is good,
I would take it back and tell the its no good and try a new one, than you will  know for shure. Was the gas comming from the tank ? it might just have a lot of air in it, can you try to put some gas down the carb to try and start it than it should suck the fuel to the carb. it just might be dry now and needs to get the gas going in the line.
