Classic/Antique Car Repair: alternator/voltage regulator, pontiac laurentian, voltage regulator

Question
Hi Roger
Thanks for the previous help on my 64 pontiac Laurentian.
I just wanted your opinion on something.
I was having problems with the battery not charging. At first I thought it was a drain on the battery as the alternator and battery both checked out OK.
I then installed a new voltage regulator, didnt help. New alternator, nothing. No charge.
I had a friend who is a mechanic look at it.He bypassed the voltage regulator, and it has worked great ever since.
His explanation is that all alternators now have the voltage regulator built in,so when I had it connected somehow? it wasnt getting juice to the alternator.
I got the alternator from a reliable part store.
Whats your opinion?
One more please? Although the carb has worked much better since I cleaned it,I still feel the choke is not working properly. Is there a simple fix for this,I can I just get a new choke? Thanks!

Hea- well you are right the newer alts. have the reg. built in . and as far as jumping it ,  he must have polorized it and got it charging in the pos+ direction.
so it should be fine now, and as far as the choke , I would look  at the choke in the morning or when the engine is cold , check to see if it is closed , and if it is not adj. itno a closed setting than  than start it car - let it get hot-to normal temp. now the choke should be open all the way. if not start adj,. till you get it where you want it. and if it is dirty it might be hanging u so spray it with a cleaner if need be.  ok
