Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 Cheve Impala - small block - wont start., neutral safety switch, solenoid starter

Question
car will not start - starter will not engage, not even a clicking noise.  Used jumper cable, no luck.  Had attempted to start one time earlier, and as I jiggled gear shift in park position, starter turned over a couple times attempted to start and then nothing.  Could this be the neutral safety switch, solenoid, starter, etc?  I haven't really been up underneath to check starter, or the nelutral safety switch which I understand is somewhere on the transmission.  What do you think? I am not a mechanic, and would prefer to get this vehicle running so that I can drive it to a shop of my choice rather than have it hauled or towed.

Hi - I would check the battery out , charge it if it is good , than clean off the battery terminals .keep it in park  . when starting it.  it should at least try to turn over with a good battery and all clean terminals. if the cables  are dirty or white with oxidation it will not get a good connection.  ok
