Classic/Antique Car Repair: convertible top motor for 1967 pontiac, san gabriel california, service folks

Question
My convertible top motor for my 1967 catalina works to put top up, but doesn't work to put top down. It was working and I went out last year close to winter and it wouldn't go down. Is the pump bad or possibly a connection. Should I replace the pump or is this pump repairable?
Thank you

Answer
I need a little more information.  When you hit the switch to put the top down, do you hear the top motor running, or is everything silent?

If you hear it running, then there is probably a problem in the pump itself, and it can be repaired by any of the top service folks.  San Gabriel Top service in San Gabriel California is the one I use, but there are others- you can go on the internet and "Google" top service, I think you'll get a lot of potential vendors, one of which may be near you.  The motor has to be removed and sent it to have it fixed, or you can drive the car to the top service place and they will take care of it.  Removing the motor might involve a lot of fluid spillage, so don't attempt that unless you are prepared to deal with the fluid.

If your car has the cable operated top system, this is not a concern - I don't know for certain which system your car has - 67 was a change-over year.

If when you hit the "down" switch you did not hear the motor running,  you have an electrical problem and there is most likely nothing wrong with your top motor.  Inspect the wiring from the up/down switch all the way back to the motor itself (behind the rear seat backrest) and you should be able to find and fix it yourself.
