Classic/Antique Car Repair: vin for 1953 ford f-100, ford f 100, mid 50s

Question
I have been unable to locate the vin on this truck, do you have any suggestions on where it might be that I havent looked? thank you.

Answer
I don't know specifically, because I don't have reference materials for trucks.  However, I do have a 1952 Ford F-2 tow truck, and I don't know where the VIN is on that either.

Back in those days, many vehicles used the engine number for the VIN - a dumb idea, because once the engine was changed, the legal trail went cold, but that's the way they did it.  Packards, which are my specialty, did that until the mid 50s, for instance.

But somewhere on our truck frames, probably on the top flange, near the right or left front wheel, is a stamped number which is unique to the vehicle, and therefore might have been used as a VIN.  If you can't find it there, you can go to your local highway patrol office (or whatever it is called in your state), they will have a book which lists all vehicles and where the chassis VIN is located.  They probably won't show you the book, or even tell you where to look, but they will come out and find your  VIN and tell you what it is, at least in California.
