Classic/Antique Car Repair: shifter is installed backwards?, 64 impala ss, shift linkage

Hello Roger,
I have a question about the shift linkage on my impala. I have a 64 impala SS 327 with a 2 speed automatic powerglide (floor shifter). The engine currently installed is from a 67 camaro and I'll have to assume that the powerglide is from the same car. If I have the shifter in the normal Park spot, the transmission is actually in a drive gear (1st I believe) and if I have the shifter pulled all the way towards the rear of the car (what should be 1st gear), the transmission is in park. Looking at the linkage it seems that it is installed backwards somehow. The linkage that runs from the floor shifter to the transmission connects to the transmission arm(?) below where the arm comes out of the transmission. The kickdown rod would then be attached above the arm to the horseshoe. If I could switch those around I believe that would solve my problem causing the arm to rotate the other way, but I don't know how to do that since the arm that comes out of the transmission is all one piece and it curves down towards the ground and that's where the shifter linkage attaches to. Can you remove that arm somehow and turn it upside down? Do I need a different arm? Is the kickdown linkage supposed to be attached to that arm, and the shifter linkage to the horseshoe? It also seems there wouldn't be enough room to connect the shifter linkage above where the arm comes out of the transmission since the floor is right there. But, there are a lot of impalas running around with 2 speeds in them, so I figure somehow it should work correctly.

I have attached two links to pictures to try and describe what I am saying better.

copy and paste those links into the address in the browser to view the pictures.

Any help you could provide me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Let me know if you have any questions. thanks, Mike

Mike;
 Where is your old tranny ? can you look at it and see the diff. you are right it is working backwords. Is the new tranny from a colum shift ?  as far as the linkage it looks as if the arm would have to be fliped from the inside of the tranny , as I see no adj. on it. can you put the floor shift in when you put the tranny into park by hand w/o the shiftet than put the shifter in and hook it up , with the shifter in the park slot , it should fit . it looks as if it would not fit if turned  180% , you might have to switch the arms from the tranny . but the linkage could be wrong also, I would look at the other tranny arm first thing.

I do not have the old tranny since the car is new to me. It may be from a column shift? Is there a way to tell? I haven't found a picture of the linkage from a floor shift 2 speed. I found a picture of a 4 speed PG in a corvette and the linkage is hooked above the arm and the kick down below, but both were on horseshoes. It didn't look like the one piece arm like mine.
The linkage rods should be correct As long as when you pull the shifter back the linkage rods extend towards the front of the car. that is what mine does. Is that the correct motion? Pull shifter back, linkage rods go forward? If that's correct, somehow I need to attach above the arm to rotate the arm the other direction... or replace the arm somehow...
Thanks again for your help.

    If it was  a 4 speed it would be easy , but I looked at a photo and it looks  as if  it should go on top  ,  the arm should go like the 4 speed type  if on the bottom it would work in reverse so it should go on the top , it might be the wrong linkage but try to get it hooked up on top .
