Classic/Antique Car Repair: Carb Kit?, mechanical expertise, fuel filter

Question
Roger
With your help my 64 Pontiac 230 6cyl standard is starting to hum along.
I cleaned the carb with spray which freed the sticky choke, and also adjusted both idles.
Just one thing bugs me now. When I shift into first or third its smooth, but it 'lugs' or 'jumps'  when I switch from first to second-not smooth.
Not so much when I shift at a real high rpm, though I can shift at low rpm for the other gears.
If this is a carb problem, would it be worthwhile to install a 'carb kit'?
I have heard of these, but just what are they, and could a guy like me with little mechanical expertise do it?
Could it be something as simple as a fuel filter? The one on it now is new,but that car sat in a field for many years before the engine was rebuilt.

Hea !, well first off if I helped you in any way to get it going , Im happy !
As far as the carb , you say at hi rpms  it is fine - did you try to re- adj. the carb. and as far as the filter- yes change it , also if it was sitting for a long time I would have changed the oil & filter and the dist. cap-wires-rotor-points-cond-spark plugs-fuel filter- etc. if you have not changed those items I would do so first and see if it will make a diff. and do not forget you only have a lil six cyld. motor so it will lag a bit at low speeds so you have to  shift at a higher rpm . or ride the gear a bit longer.
ok  good luck  Roger
PS as far as the carb kit goes  I would not do it , it sounds like your carb is working fine ..
