Classic/Antique Car Repair: starting the car, newer cars, controlling power

Question
my ignation switch won't turn ?

Answer
Hi Tina

There really are only four reasons for this problem:

1.  The wrong key
2.  The ignition lock is active (usually only on newer cars so this may not apply in your case).
3.  The tumblers (the mechanism) inside the ignition are rusted or gummed up or so worn the switch is ruined.
4.  The ignition switch isn't the problem...on many cars the ignition switch merely activates a 12" or so rod in line with your steering column and it's the rod that actually activates the switches controlling power to the starter, etc.  It is conceivable the rod is blocked in some way.
