Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1955 Cadillac Hydrovac brake..., google search, napa store

Question
1955 Cadillac Hydrovac brake system. Brake fluid gets sucked through the vacumn assit hose. How hard and time consuming is it to rebuild and are seal kits available? Where could I run across a schematic of the system?

Answer
Oh, man - the dreaded Hydrovac!   I recently sold my 55 Coupe deVille with the exact same problem.  These are very tricky to rebuild, and I don't recommend doing it yourself.  I don't know if you can buy a kit for it.

I rebuild all my own master brake cylinders and power brake units myself, excepting only the Hydrovac - I've been burned too many times on them.

There are a couple of shops that will rebuild them for you - Karp's in Riverside California is one I have used - they are very good.  There is also a place called "Booster Dewey" somewhere in Oregon or Washington state that also has a very good reputation, although I haven't used them myself.  You can turn up their address with a Google search.  You can also have any NAPA store send it out for rebuilding, but I don't have as much confidence in their rebuilder, and it will cost twice as much.

Good Luck  - I loved driving that car!
