Classic/Antique Car Repair: Alternator/battery connections, neoprene cable, gauge wire

Question
My son has a '70 Chevelle 'hotrod'. (It is a 400 small block, somewhat tricked up.) We moved the battery to the trunk (not sure exactly why) and ran #1 awg stranded copper neoprene cable from the battery to the starter. We are having problems with the battery losing its charge after short trips and 4-5 starts.  The alternator and the battery have been tested (by Auto Zone) and they are said to be good.  Now I am wondering what the circuitry should be from the alternator back to the battery so that the recharging will take place as the engine runs. I think that circuit may not have been reconnected when the battery was moved, but I am not a great spark chaser, so I need some help on this. Can we just run a new cable from one of the alternator terminals back to the positive terminal on the battery? If so, which terminal and what size cable would you recommend?

Answer
HI
TRUNK OK, well you might have a drain or loosing some charge , the wire MUST be the SAME GAUGE WIRE As THE BATTERY. AND the ALT. the wire that went to the battery should be the same  size wire you can run back to the batt. in the trunk but you must use at least the same size wire at all times. did you test the charge to see what it is sending back to the battery as far as charging volts , it should be at least 14 volts and up ok. and is the battery grounded to the frame good.
