Classic/Antique Car Repair: Brake line repair, straight pieces, major auto

Question
Have a pin hole leak in a brake line of a 1987 buick.  Is there a kit or any advice you can offer as how to replace just the damaged section, not the whole line?  The line is good except where the bushing wore out and the metal clamp had a metal to metal wear spot.  Thanks

Answer
Brake tubing is sold in assorted lengths at any NAPA or other major auto parts place.  It comes in straight pieces, with the fittings already installed.

Measure the whole damaged line from fitting to fitting, to see what length to buy, allowing extra for the bends.

Then buy whatever pieces you need to make up the whole replacement line.  There are couplings you can buy at the same time to assemble longer lengths; sometimes installation is much easier with a group of small pieces than trying to snake it through a lot of obstacles in one long piece.

You must use the pieces whole, not try to cut and re-attach the ends, because they are special ends with special tools and skill required to install them - don't even think of making your own!   The tubing and the fittings are special for brake use, don't let anyone sell you plain flared tubing and fittings for general use - make sure it is brake tubing!

You will need a bending tool - these are cheap - just ask the counter man for the right size.  Don't try to bend this stuff without a bending tool, it will crimp and weaken the walls.

This tubing carries VERY high pressure, and your life depends on it, so don't try any shortcuts!
