Classic/Antique Car Repair: VACUM ANVANCE, chev 327, vacume

Question
1967 CHEV. 327/350HP  HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE TO HOOK THE DIST. VACUM ADVANCE ON CARB. TIMMED OR PORTED ?

Answer
Hea,
Hi , When you do the timing you should remove the vacume from the dist. than plug it so no vacume comes out.As no vacume should be going to the dist. when you are timing the engine.
Than after you do the timing you re-plug the hose , it goes to the carb. carb only not the intake manifold. As when you give the engine more gasd-the vacume changes so it changes in the dist. also.  it should go to a hose the same size as the hose that is on the vacume  adv. do not run it to a larger hole with a adaptor as that will be too much. I'am not shure of the timing off hand as I do not have my book with me but I think it is around 8 deg. a tdc.try it. but I myself would allways find a happy medium with the timing as I would get it as good as I could by ear than check it and most of the time it would be a bit adv. as I wanted it that way. also with a vacume gauge you can do a lot. but you have to play around with it if you are adding new parts to it. etc. I also most of the time took the dist out and put in a Mallory H.D. dist.and coil and wires , but if I did not have the funds at the time I would remove the dist. drill 1 or 2 toles in the advance plate and bolt it down, and put new weights in it and new springs and use it like that till I got a mallory. you can do a few things to it. OK
