Motorcycle Repair: starting problems with 02 Road King, oil temp guage, thunder header

Question
Mike,
Hope you can help me.  I have a 2002 road king classic with fuel injection.  Just bought the bike last April and love it.  It has been upgraded quite a bit: Stage 2 Screamin' Eagle kit - dealer installed, thunder header, fuel optimizer, lots of chrome.  I was planning to store in a heated space at a local dealership but early snow messed that up.  It is in my unheated garage with a full tank of gas.  I've been waiting for a decent day to get it to the dealership but haven't been able to.  To make a long story short, I have tried to start it a couple of times with out success.  The first time I tried, it turned over and wanted to start and almost did but didn't.  I stopped trying because I thought I would end up killing the battery or starter.  The next nice day, around 55 degrees, I tried again.  The oil temp guage on the dip stick said the oil was 40 degrees.  When I tried to start the engine, it would turn over one short turn and then the starter (at least I think its the starter) would just click.  When I looked in the owners manual for info, the only thing I could come up with was that the oil might be too heavy in the winter/cold.  Also, I'm using synthetic oil.  Do you think its the oil or do you think its something else?  At first I thought it might be the battery or the starter but now I'm not sure what it is and I'm concerned it might be something major.  Can you help me?

Answer
Your oil is fine, its your battery that is causing the problem. You need to get a battery tender which will keep the battery charged and it will make the battery last longer. Its hard on a battery to sit and not be fully charged. The other problem is the hard starting. When a bike sits for a long time its hard to start. My bike sits in my unheated garage all winter here in Ohio. When spring gets here its a bear to start, but it will with a fully charged battery.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
