Classic/Antique Car Repair: Steering Column Diameters, shaft diameters, mg guy

Question
Hi...I was hoping you could help me.I have a couple of steering
wheels....the steering shaft diameters are different in 67, 68 and 69
MGB's ..do you happen to know what the diameters are..help from one MG
guy to another

Answer
Hi John,
The 62 to 67 had a larger diameter spline than the later "Bs". That I am sure of, I am working from memory but I think 68 & 69, even though it was still a "wire" type wheel had a smaller spline. I know the stamped metal wheels of 70 and later had the smaller spline. If your wheels are all the "wire" spoked wheels (original) and you have two different diameter splines, than the smaller is the 68 & 69 and the larger is 62 to 67. Later model "Bs" had a very steep taper just below the spline but used the smaller spline. I don't remember what years they were.

I have a known 67 wheel and a known 71 wheel that I can measure for you if you need it. You can contact me at,
