Classic/Antique Car Repair: Remove C-4 Transmission from 1966 Mustang, speedometer cable, universal joints

Question
I have an original 1966 Mustang. The motor is out to be rebuilt. I need to remove the transmission to bring to a shop to be re-sealed.
A friend was to help but is ill. Can you instruct me how to remove the tranny following procedure so that I can make my appointment?

Answer
I can't give you a step by step procedure, but I can give you some general guidelines:

Drain the transmission (or if it doesn't have a drain plug, remove the bottom pan and empty it.  Don't clean out the pan, the shop will want to see what kind of debris is in there. After you empty the pan, just loosely put it back on to keep the innards of the transmission clean.  Save some of the drained fluid so the shop can see what shape it is in.

Drain the converter using the brass plugs, or pull the converter out from the front of the transmission and keep it face down so it doesn't leak. Either way is acceptable.

Disconnect the shift and throttle linkages, and the wiring to the neutral safety/backup light switch, if any.  Take out the speedometer cable.

Undo the rear universal joints and remove the driveshaft from the rear of the transmission.   Rent or borrow a good transmission jack to support the weight.  Remove the oil fill/dipstick tube, then the cross member that holds up the rear of the transmission.  If there are any other support bolts, remove those also.  Then lower the transmission to the ground and you're done.  This is a heavy unit, don't take any chances in handling it!
