Classic/Antique Car Repair: 69 Camaro Ignition Switch Removal, 69 camaro, screw holes

Question
Hi its me again, I'm trying to remove my ignition switch to change it since im sure its bad. I've removed the steering wheel, all covers, and flasher assembly, now I'm trying to figure out how to get the switch out, my book tells me about a flash casting to break but i dont know what its refering to. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer
I'm pretty sure the switch is bolted to the side of the steering column, about the same height as the brake pedal.  If your problem is in the mechanism that operates the switch, up near the steering wheel, that's a different story, but if you are just trying to change the actual switch, it is easy to get at and you don't have to take anything apart.

The switch is operated by a rod that moves up and down when you rotate the key slot deal, and the usual reason for problems with the switches is that the mounting bolt has loosened and allowed the switch to move out of adjustment.  If your problem is getting the starter to crank, this is very likely the cause.  All you need to do to fix this is to readjust the switch upward (the screw holes are elongated so you can move it by just slightly loosening the mounting screws) so that the rod pushes into it a little farther.  If you slither under there and take a look, you'll see what I mean.

69 was a transition year for GM cars, so yours may not have this type of switch, but if it does, and this is your problem, this should help you.

If I'm wrong, and what you are really having trouble with is the mechanism in the locking steering column, you're on your own, because this car is a little newer than any I've worked on.  You'll probably have to take it to an automotive locksmith.

I hope this is some help,
