Hi:

I have a 56 Chevy Bel Air 4 Dr. with inline 6 small block 238 Engine, and i want to check tune up angle with the stroboscopic gun.

I need the angle specification in order to tune up the engine correctly.

Can you help me with this?

I have never heard of a stroboscopic gun , can you be a bit more spicific. As i think you might mean the timing
light as that is the only gun thst I now of for tune ups.
thanks

Answer
ok' i thought you ment a timing light
it has been some time since i have had a straight 6 to work on. I think the timing should be around 6-8 degrees b.t.d.c.
and do not forget to un plug  the vacume line to the dist and plug the hose from pulling the air in  use a nail or tape. than turn the dist. slowly as you will hear the enigne go up and / or down as I use to do those by ear most of the time as with a vacume gauge you can do a lot, so loosen the dist nut a bit and turn it slowly and watch the marks if you can get it to idle good and steady and if you go any more and it starts to run bad back off. but try 6 or 8 before top dead center also the engine should be at a good idle around 500 + or more r.p.m.s if a standard you can go a bit lower . also if you ever do need tune up data you can go to your local library and look at the tech. books for free. o.k.
