Classic/Antique Car Repair: 66 mustang window, auto glass shop, glass run

Question
I recently purchased a 66 mustang coup. When the passenger window is rolled up it is fine but once you shut the door it drops down about a 1/2 an inch. The next part is how do you align the window? With the door shut the window doesn't sit flush against the weatherstripping. It is out farther than the rear window. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
The window dropping down when you shut the door is an indication that the window lift mechanism is worn out.

You might be able to tighten up the slop in the parts by taking the door apart and removing the window regulator.  This is a major job and possibly dangerous - there is a very powerful spring that you have to unhook to get the regulator apart, and unless you have done this sort of thing before, I advise you to take it to an auto glass shop and ask them to see if they can fix it for you, or find you a better regulator.

They can also adjust the glass track so that the top of the glass sits against the weatherstripping.  There are adjustments for this.  If you look at the back of the door with the door open, you'll see a screw at the bottom of the door and one at the top of the door - these locate the rear glass run channel.  You can loosen these screws, move the glass to where you want it and re-tighten them.

However, with your worn out regulator, I suspect the window channels need to be replaced also.   If, with the door open and the glass down a couple of inches from the top, see if you can wiggle the glass in and out.  If you can, see if you see any moving screws on the back edge of the door.  If you do, try tightening them to see if it helps.  If not, you need to take it to a pro and get the door taken apart for an inspection.

Good Luck!
