Classic/Antique Car Repair: obtaining a key, gas caps, lock smith

Question
I recently obtained a 1982 XJ6 4.2 12 valve Jaguar. My question is I need to know if I can get a key made for the car ignition and also if the trunk lock is different I need to have a key made for it also. Could you help me out?  Thank you Fred

Answer
Hi Fred,
If you mean get a duplicate key for each, most key shops have the blanks and can dup a key. But if you mean you got a car with no keys it is more difficult. Look through the car to see if you can find out what city the car was newly purchased in and ask or send that Jag dealer a letter with the vin # and request new keys as they record the key numbers. If that can't be done just take the Vin # to your closest Jag dealer and ask them to run that Vin # in their computer to see where it was sold. I don't know if the Jag distributor retains key # but the dealers do. The last option is to remove the ignition lock assembly and a door or trunk lock assembly and take them to any lock smith. The doors, gas caps and trunk are the same and the ignition is different. Jag dealers have key blanks and some key shops have them.
I hope this helps,
