Question
Hi I have a second car and it is a 64 chevy ss impals with a 327 in it. w/a four speed , as all so far is just fine i have noticed a bit of a leak comming from the right wheel and it is not break fluid also I can hear a humming noise from the same area, and I was told by some friends that my right wheel can go in and out when I drive can you help me.?

Answer
ok as I was just about to get off the air. ok as you are telling me that you have some fluid comming from the backing plate but it is not break fluid also you sea that you have had people look at your wheel when you are moveing and it will move a bit, well I would say that this is a bit serious not to mention dangerous, as if it iws a wheel bearing that is going to blow you could have a serious accident due to it.
first is first best thing is to get it to a mech. a.s.a.p. and have him look at the wheel as if he can move the wheel back and forth it is your wheel bearing, so you must have it replaced, the first thing is jack up the car, than you will have to remove the back plate covering the rearend as a lot of fluid is going to come out so have a drain pail ready. now second you will have to remove all brack parts from the bad side, than you will have to get a wheel puller, now you have to take off the four (4) bolts that hold the backing brack plate om off. and than push in on the axel than go to the inside of the rearend and you will find a pin with a small bolt in it take out the bolt and do not loose it second take the axel and push it in to the center so it will be loose and this way with the bolt out you now must take out the pin that goes thru the rearend and gears.this pin hoilds the axels in place now with the pin out take off the c shape clamp that is on the end of the axel and be carefull not to loose the other side ok. now you go to the end of the axel and put the axel puller on it and give it a few swift bangs out. now the axel will pull right out- ok go to a shop and have a new bearing put on and get a new seal as you got to be carefull when you do this you can pry out the old one but the new one must be put in properly if you have a large socket that will fit it you can use that as a tool to tap it back into place, ok now you are done so put it all back the same way you took it out put the big pin in the rear and replace the lock bolt than the cover w/ a new gasket and new rear end fulid no other type it must be rear end gear oil. than put the axel and the four (4) bolts back and the wheel and you are set to go. but be ready to do the other side as when one side goes the other will be right behind it.
goodluck
