Classic/Antique Car Repair: engine work, auto tranny, duty shocks

Question
Hi Roger,  I have a 1975 chevy nova, straight 6 cylinder, 3 speed automatic. The body is perfect so I'm thinking of putting an 8 cylinder in.  Would any chevy big block fit without much difficulty?  Also, do you think I could use the same transmission, would everything line up? What 8 cylinder would you recommend? Are there any other things I might need to change such as motor mounts and springs?  Thanks

Answer
throw away the 6 cyld.
if I was you I would go for a 350 or a 327 small block, you will have a lot more room, the radeator might not work, the motor mts, should fit, if not a kit is made so  that is no big deal, if you want a automatic all should fit the most would be the drive shaft would have to be for a v-a auto tranny or if you were to go to a 4 speed stick you will have to put in a clutch pedel a lil bit of work but the trannys now are good if you get it beefed up a bit it should work great.if the tranny bolts up to the bell housing it should work but if you are going for power you should find a good 4 speed auto tranny and get it worked on or use it till you want it worked on. the 3 speed tranny if it does fit might not last with a lot of power but if it bolts to the bellhousing it should fit, try to find a v-8 with a tranny on it. building the engine yourself would be the best way to go if you have the funds and the means.as far as the springs a small block it should be ok with heavy duty shocks, with a big block I would for sure put heavy duty big block springs in the front and do somthing to the back air schocks anyway.do yourself a big favor and get headers.it will boost the horse power and give you engine room also, i hope i have helped you if you wish for any thing else please e-mail me ok
