Classic/Antique Car Repair: 4 door vintage cars, station wagons, older cars

Question
Dick
I have been told that for older cars, most people look for two door hardtops and convertibles.Four doors are not worth near as much, and are mostly used for parts. Is this true?
I am restoring my 64 Pontiac four door, which with a little work could look great.Thanks.

Answer
Speaking just about body styles, I'd say the most desireable by far are the convertibles, followed by 2 DR hardtops, then Station Wagons, then 4 DR sedans and hardtops, and finally 2 door sedans and coupes.

However, if you are interested in utility, the 4 door sedans and wagons are by far the most useable.  They are also quieter.

So as with decisions about what you are going to use the car for, the main question is what do you want from the car.  If you want to drive it and use it, there is nothing wrong with a 4 door sedan.  If you are thinking about selling it for a profit, a convertible would be a much better car to work on.

A further caution is that I don't beleive it is possible to "restore" a car and make a profit on it - the cost of the average restoration is about 3 times what the car is worth when it is done.
