Classic/Antique Car Repair: im trying to replace my speedometer..., speed warning device, one false move

Question
i'm trying to replace my speedometer in my 1969 camaro, none of the reference books i have show or tell me exactly how to do this can you help?
thanks, bob

Answer
I have not done this on a 69, but I can quote to you from the manual, for whatever that is worth:

Disconnect ground cable from the battery.

Remove instrument panel pad, A/C attachments and radio brace attachments.

Remove mast jacket supports at toe pan and dash, and lower column. (BOTH SUPPORTS MUST BE DETACHED TO PREVENT DISTORTION OF MAST JACKET!)

Remove cluster retaining screws from face of panel and partially remove gauge cluster assembly from opening.

Reaching behind cluster assembly, disconnect speedometer cable, speed warning device (if equipped) and chassis harness connector at rear of panel.

Now remove cluster assembly from car.

No longer quoting now:   These instructions are rather cryptic, but I suppose you can figure it out from there. I don't know how to remove the instrument panel pad, you'll have to inspect it and decide whether it simply snaps down or is held by screws.

The mast jacket they refer to is the steering column support.  The reason these are very tricky to work around is that they are collapsable columns, designed to telescope in case of an accident, and they are very delicate - one false move can cause them to crumple.  Don't hit anything with a hammer!

Once you get the cluster out and sitting on your workbench, it should be pretty clear how the speedometer comes out of there, but looking at your replacement unit should give you clues also.

Good Luck.
