Question
As im driving i hear a winding noise when the accelerator is pressed and on occasion the rpms is not where it should be. My check engine light is now on and sometimes as im tryn to accelerate my speed on the highway, the light will flash. Autozone checked and the code says cylinder 5 misfiring. What do i need to have done? Please help.

Answer
Hi Susan,
We can assume that the code is P0305 which is misfiring on cylinder no. 5. You might try to verify that by turning the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or  less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer reading to see if the mileage reading is replaced by the code P0305. Let me know if a different number appears.
The cause of misfire on a single cylinder could be either related to the spark (spark plug/spark wire/or spark coil) or to the fuel injector for that cylinder (the injector, the wiring to it) or to a mechanical problem with the cylinder (but that is costly so the spark and the fuel injector possibilities should be evaluated first). If you have tools and the knowledge to remove the spark plug you could check whether you have spark getting to the that plug and you could check whether the plug looks 'wet' when removed which would suggest the injector is out of control. The compression measurement of the cylinder when the plug is removed would tell you if there is something mechanical causing the problem. A good mechanic should be able to check those out quickly with about an hour of labor.
I am not sure about the noise, and also what you mean by rpms are not what they are supposed to be (does it seem they are higher than you would expect for that speed which suggests the transmission may be in a lower gear than it usually is at that speed which could be 2nd gear and that might mean the transmission has taken a counter measure by self-shifting into 2nd gear when it detects an issue with the transmission and by so-doing avoids damage and alerts you to its notice of a problem). Does it sometimes refuse to shift into 3rd gear, which is the same sort of an alert to you?
Those are my suggestions.
Please read the PS (below) and respond to it.
Thanks,
Roland
