Dodge Repair: distributor, powertrain control module, odometer reading

Question
What makes the distributor fire on a 2005 Dodge Stratus 2.4L?

Answer
Hi Peggy,
The spark is activated by the powertrain control module which does so by activating one or the other coil in the ignition coil pack which then fires a pair of spark plugs. There is no distributor on that engine so I believe the issue is actually one of the engine rotational sensors is not working as those are what inform the powertrain module when the engine is at the exact point to fire the spark. You could start by checking fuses 14,23,25 in the box in the engine compartment just in case one of those that is involved with the spark generation is blown. If those are alright, then I would try to get a fault code readout of the powertrain control module to see if it has recognized why there is no spark. I assume you have no spark.
First try the igntion switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer reading in the cluster to see the mileage reading changes to show a 4 digit number(s) preceded by a P. Tell me what appears.
If that doesn't work, then go to a nationwide auto parts store, such as Autozone, where they often will do a fault code readout using a plug-in code reader. Get the specific fault code numbers and we'll go from there to figure out why you aren't getting spark. If you can't get a free readout then an independent shop will usually do it for under $40.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for about 1 second when you turn the key to the run position? If not, then check as well fuse 8 in the power box.
