Dodge Repair: 02 INTREPID: engine knock/header issue?, connecting rod bearings, main bearings

Question
Hey Roland it's me Nidia again I want to know I am looking forward to purchasing a 2002 dodge intrepid I was told that it has 138,000 miles and has a knocking sound which they feel can be a header issue. The header will estimate from 180.00 to about 240.00 will it really be the header if it's making a knocking sound?

Answer
Hi Nidia,
I am not familiar with the term "header issue". Can they be more specific as to what they mean?
Knocking sounds from the area of the cylinder block are typically due to exessive wear on the crankshaft main bearings or the piston connecting rod bearings, and either of those are engine rebuild jobs to correct. So I would seek a 'second opinion' about the sound, from an engine rebuilding shop, before buying that vehicle. If you get further info about what they mean by a 'header issue' let me know and also tell me if this is the 2.7 or 3.5L engine.
Please 'rate' my answer as you have been so kind to do before. A 'nomination' can also be made.
Roland
