Dodge Repair: Fuel Injector: preventive maintenance?, camping vacation, maintenance issue

Question
Hi Roland,

Regarding my 1999 Dodge Dakota 6CID 3.9L 2WD. Manual Trans.

42,800 original miles.

I'm getting the truck ready for a long camping vacation and I've updated several maintenance items.

My question is the fuel injectors. The truck runs like new. Any need to replace the injectors other than the potential for improved fuel economy?

If there were any issue with the injectors, would I expect rough idle, acceleration, etc.?

Regards,
David

Answer
Hi David,
Fuel injectors are very long-lived so I doubt there is a maintenance issue with yours.
Usually if there is an issue it causes a 'miss' or a mixture issue, which would be detected by the on-board self-diagnostic system and thus illuminate the check engine light and store a fault code in the engine controller memory. Absent that history, I would set aside any concerns for the injectors. Enjoy your camping trip!
